Kappa Alpha Psi
On the sacred night of January 5, 1911, the pulsating heartbeat of ten African-American college visionaries gave birth to a brotherhood, christened as Kappa Alpha Nu. In homage to the trailblazing Alpha Kappa Nu club that ignited its flame in 1903, the chosen name resonated with a promise, a vow to transcend the ordinary realms of social camaraderie.
These architects of destiny were not content with the ordinary; they envisioned Kappa Alpha Nu as a bastion of achievement, a citadel of distinction in the Greek letter world. It was not just another social clique; it was a covenant forged in the fires of culture, patriotism, and honor. Elder W. Diggs, with his calm wisdom, and Byron K. Armstrong, with his critical scholarship, stood as the pillars upon which this grand edifice of brotherhood was raised.
In the crucible of their collective dedication, the ritualistic tapestry, the constitutional bedrock, the resonating hymn, and the indomitable motto of Kappa Alpha Nu were meticulously woven. Insignias and emblems emerged as symbols of a legacy yet to unfold. Kappa Alpha Nu, under the divine charter granted by the Indiana Secretary of State on May 15, 1911, not only became the first incorporated Black fraternity in the United States but an immortal testament to the enduring spirit of triumph against the shadows of adversity.
Born from the ashes of racism, Kappa Alpha Nu underwent a poignant evolution, entangled with the venomous tendrils of bigotry. In the crucible of time, a haunting incident unfolded. Amidst the thunderous beats of Frank Summers hurdling through life’s challenges on the track, the words of a White student struck like a dagger, staining the fraternity’s name with malicious intent: “He is a member of Kappa Alpha Nig.”
The fraternity, a sanctuary of brotherhood and pride, found itself standing at the crossroads of identity and respect. The resonance of its name and the image it projected hung in the balance, a fragile tapestry threatened by the callous words of ignorance. For the Founders, guardians of a legacy forged in adversity, this was an affront that could not be endured.
In a defiant act of self-redemption, the Founders embarked on a transformative journey. The tainted “N” was cast aside, replaced by the defiant resilience of the Greek letter “Ψ.” In this symbolic rebirth, Kappa Alpha Psi® emerged, adorned with a distinctive Greek letter emblem, a testament to the fraternity’s unwavering spirit.
The metamorphosis culminated in a resolute decree, echoing through the hallowed halls of the Grand Chapter Meeting in December 1914. On April 15, 1915, the gavel fell, sealing the fate of the fraternity’s rebirth. Kappa Alpha Psi® stood tall, an indomitable force, its name no longer tainted by the sting of prejudice but forged anew in the fires of resilience and determination.
Kappa Alpha Psi® stands as the resilient heartbeat of history, the second oldest collegiate historically Black Greek letter fraternity, and the trailblazing first intercollegiate fraternity incorporated as a national body. Its roots are deeply embedded in the soil of distinction, planting the Alpha Chapter firmly on the sacred grounds of Indiana University, etching an indelible mark on the hallowed campus.
With a brotherhood spanning time and space, Kappa Alpha Psi® transcends boundaries. Over 250,000 members, a formidable force, unite under its banner, weaving a tapestry of kinship across 700 undergraduate and alumni chapters that echo in nearly every corner of the United States. The fraternity’s influence extends far beyond, reaching international shores with thirteen chapters in lands as diverse as Nigeria, South Africa, Bermuda, Bahamas, U.S. Virgin Islands, Panama, United Kingdom, Germany, South Korea, Dominican Republic, Abu Dhabi, Canada, and Japan.
In the mosaic of NPHC-affiliated organizations, Kappa Alpha Psi® stands singular, adorned with not one but two names: Kappa Alpha Psi (ΚΑΨ) and Phi Nu Pi (ΦΝΠ). This duality births the affectionate moniker for its members, the esteemed “Nupes.”
Yet, it’s not just in nomenclature that Kappa Alpha Psi® distinguishes itself. It proudly heralds a legacy carved by individuals who embody the very essence of “Achievement in Every Field of Human Endeavor.” Each member is a testament to resilience, ambition, and the unyielding pursuit of excellence, making Kappa Alpha Psi® not just a fraternity but a living legacy that resonates through the corridors of time.
